Dignity and Mutual Respect

Scope

The Middle Ages in Modern Games network seeks to create and uphold a safe and productive environment for everyone, irrespective of their identity: this includes but is not limited to their race, caste, ethnic or national origin, nationality, colour, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, class and occupation, immigration status, religion, pregnancy or maternity status, or marriage or civil partnership status.

To ensure that everyone can benefit from the academic networks, discussions and opportunities that we offer at our events, the MAMG committee expects all attendees in any capacity to adhere to this policy both in our online events and at any conference venues and conference-related social events, as well as on any form of social media.

The Middle Ages in Modern Games network includes attendees from a variety of different backgrounds with a wide range of opinions and perspectives. We expect all attendees to engage with the topics, presentations, and discussions at all MAMG events in good faith, and in the spirit of scholarly inquiry, mutual respect, and constructive dialogue. Critical discussion and disagreement are welcome, but they should be expressed respectfully and without personal attacks or otherwise discriminatory conduct. Please be mindful of this and appreciate that behaviours and comments that seem harmless to you may impact other people in different ways. This includes both direct harassment, bullying, and sexual harassment, and indirectly creating an environment that is unproductive and hostile to wider groups of people. We use the definitions of harassment, sexual harassment, and bullying below.

Reporting Concerns

We do not tolerate any form of harassment or bullying against anyone involved in our network and events, whether in person or online. If you feel you are being harassed or bullied, notice harassing or bullying behaviour, or have any other concerns, please contact any member of the organising committee of the relevant event as soon as possible. For a list of our current committee members, please see below. We value your attendance and take all reports seriously and wish to ensure that all delegates feel safe across all of our events throughout the year.

We are committed to protecting the privacy of those who report concerns under this policy. Identifying information about anyone involved in a report will not be disclosed beyond those who need it to assess or respond to the matter, except where required by law or necessary to protect the safety of attendees. Retaliation against anyone who reports misconduct, raises concerns in good faith, or participates in the resolution of a complaint will not be tolerated.

Enforcement

If you are asked to stop a behaviour which is deemed to be inappropriate, we expect you to comply immediately. We reserve the right to take action against people who violate these standards, and to determine what is proportionate and appropriate to the conduct in question. This may include formal warnings, removing or expelling offenders from events, and potentially banning them from future events, both virtual and in-person, in all capacities. If someone is expelled from a Middle Ages in Modern Games event that involves conference fees under this policy, they are not entitled to repayment of those fees.

All MAMG attendees at all events are expected to comply with this policy.

Creating a Hostile Environment: Actions that are not always directed at a specific person, but intentionally or unintentionally create an unpleasant and academically unproductive environment by targeting groups of people, especially pertaining to characteristics listed in the first paragraph of this policy, or by behaving in a way that negatively derails or disrupts MAMG events or sessions.
